How does a football hooligan become an opera singer? And what would his old mates in the Cockney Reds make of his love of Latin poetry and other romantic tendencies? Mark Glanville was born into a Jewish household, where his own Jewishness was denied by his father. Son of a novelist and himself a gifted singer and musician, young Mark goes to an inner-city comp where instead of the anticipated musical education he receives a hothouse schooling in the rituals of thuggery. He swiftly graduates to the football terraces where the top boys reign. Soon, he's running with the Cockney Reds, Manchester Utd's London contingent, as they terrorize opponents nationwide, managing to disguise his more civilized roots with astonishing success. He leaves the company of hooligans to 'do time' at Oxford University, which itself becomes a prison of sorts, one he escapes from regularly in search of aggro at the football. Only music seems to offer any possibility of release or redemption and he clings to the dream of it while he leads his increasingly strained double, even triple, life. Finally, it takes a good woman to open his cell door. The Goldberg Variations is a kaleidoscopic, picaresque self-portrait of a man whose many lives were often nothing less than giddying for him. This is a funny, surprisingly tender, occasionally scary memoir of how one man became himself after years of running wild. hardcover, Ausgabe: 1st, Format: Import, Label: Flamingo, Flamingo, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 2003, Studio: Flamingo, Verkaufsrang: 7241606
